HANDMADE CUSTOM-FIT HOLSTERS FOR ALMOST ANY GUN
Are Hybrid Holsters Good? Common Problems and What to Look For
Hybrid holsters are good daily holsters when they're well built. Most complaints about them, like a backer that folds over or a clip that slips, come from how a particular holster was made, and we build ours to avoid them. A hybrid is usually a little thicker than a Kydex holster, but our leather and carbon fiber hybrids are thinner. On hot days the leather backer can soak up sweat, which keeps it off your gun.
FALCO Holsters, a company crafting custom-fit handmade holsters for almost any handgun and light, makes hybrids alongside full leather and full Kydex holsters.

What is a hybrid holster?
A hybrid holster is a Kydex shell molded to your gun and attached to a wider leather backer that sits against your body. If you're still deciding between materials, our comparison of leather, Kydex and hybrid holsters covers all three.
Why do hybrid holsters get a bad reputation?
Hybrid holsters get a bad reputation because a badly built one can become unsafe quickly, for example when its leather backer goes soft and folds over the mouth of the holster. Daniel Reedy, an editor at Primer Peak, wrote: "On multiple occasions I have seen hybrid holsters from multiple manufacturers become unsafe within hours of being worn."
Does a hybrid holster collapse when the gun is out?
A well-built hybrid stays open when the gun is out. The ones that collapse have a backer too soft to hold its shape against your body, so the leather bends inward over the mouth of the holster.
A collapsed backer is dangerous when you reholster, because a fold of leather can end up inside the trigger guard as the gun goes in. Reedy warns that a floppy backer can do this.
Body shape plays a part too. Firearms expert Massad Ayoob wrote in Gun Digest about carriers with a fuller midsection: "The bad news is that the pressure of the flesh will tend, over time, to roll the material over the back of the slide." He warned that this can slow or even stall the draw.
The fix is a backer that stays stiff around the mouth. On our Kydex-shell hybrids, the shell is attached to a backer made of two layers of leather, cut and stitched together.
Our TalonGuard hybrids are built differently. They're leather holsters with a Kydex insert inside. The insert covers the trigger guard from both sides, so the part of the holster around the trigger is Kydex, not leather that could fold into it.

Do hybrid holsters get sweaty?
Hybrid holsters can get sweaty, because the leather backer against your skin can soak up sweat on hot summer days. The good side is that the sweat stays in the leather instead of reaching your gun. The downside is that daily sweat wears leather out sooner. Shooting Illustrated, an official journal of the NRA, wrote: "Continuous sweat applied to leather can make it fall apart sooner."
Perforated leather helps with sweat, and so does a sweat guard sized for you: tall enough to keep the slide off your skin, but not so tall that it gets in the way of your grip. The A907, for example, comes with or without an extended sweat guard.
Does hybrid holster retention loosen over time?
Retention in a well-built hybrid doesn't loosen on its own, because the part that holds your gun is the Kydex shell. The shell is molded to your gun and holds it by friction. Kydex keeps its molded shape, and sweat doesn't affect it. Some of our hybrids also have retention screws, so you can set the tension you like.
That friction fit counts as Level 1 on our retention scale. If you compare holsters by retention level, check how each maker defines its levels, because there's no industry standard. Our guide to holster retention levels explains how the levels work.
Are hybrid holster clips strong enough?
Hybrid clips are usually the same kinds of clips other holsters use. Shooting Illustrated wrote that "most hybrid holster belt clips are no different from other holster clips." Most complaints are about clips that are hard to get on and off. Reedy also warns that cheap clips can let the holster slip out of place.
A clip that's hard to get on and off is usually a tradeoff, not a defect. A wide hybrid often has two clips, which hold it steady but take longer to put on than one. Steel clips grip the belt hardest, and they're also the hardest to remove. Choose the clip for how you carry:
- If the holster goes on in the morning and stays on all day, choose steel. It's the most rigid clip.
- If you take the holster off often, choose a clip that's easier to remove, like the extra-wide clip on our A907, which has a lip you can grab to pull it off with one hand.

Are hybrid holsters bulky, and do they print?
A hybrid is usually a little thicker than a Kydex holster for the same gun. That's because the backer is an extra layer and it's wider than the shell. Reedy wrote that "bolting a leather backer to a kydex shell virtually guarantees you a bulkier holster than a standard holster design." You may need to loosen your belt a notch.
Bulk doesn't have to mean printing. Four things keep a hybrid hidden under your shirt:
- A smaller backer. Less leather around the gun means less to hide.
- A claw. A claw catches on the inside of your belt and angles the grip in toward your body. Our guide to holster claws explains how it works.
- Ride height. A holster that rides lower hides more of the grip.
- Carbon fiber. Our leather and carbon fiber hybrids are slimmer, because carbon fiber is thinner and sturdier than Kydex.
Do the screws on a hybrid holster come loose?
Screws can work loose on any holster that's held together with them, depending on how you use it, even though we apply threadlocker to ours. A hybrid usually has several, for the clips and, on some models, for retention. Check them every so often, and whenever the holster feels different on your belt. Tighten them with a screwdriver until they're snug, not as hard as you can, because overtightening can strip a screw.

Hybrid holster problems at a glance
| Complaint | Usual cause | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| Backer folds over the mouth | Leather too soft to hold its shape against your body | A stiff, two-layer backer |
| Sweat soaks the leather | The leather backer absorbs sweat | Good leather, perforations, a sweat guard sized for you |
| Clip slips or is hard to use | A cheap clip, or a clip that doesn't suit how you carry | Steel for all-day wear, an easy-off clip if you remove it often |
| Bulk and printing | The extra leather layer | A smaller backer, a claw, a lower ride height, a carbon fiber hybrid |
| Screws work loose | Screws can loosen on any holster that uses them | Threadlocker on the screws, plus checking and tightening them now and then |
How to check a hybrid holster before you carry it
- Take the gun out with the holster on your belt. The mouth should stay open on its own.
- Press the backer near the mouth with your thumb. It should feel firm and spring back, not fold.
- Holster the gun using one hand. If the leather catches on the slide, the backer is too soft or the sweat guard is too tall.
- Look at the trigger guard. The Kydex should cover it completely, with no leather in the way.
- Test the retention. Hold the holster with the unloaded gun in it upside down over a bed or couch. The gun should stay in the holster.
- Holster and draw several times. The gun should seat with the same feel every time.
- Tug the holster on your belt. The clip should not slide along the belt or lift off it.
- Check every screw. All of them should be snug.
- Wear it around the house for a few hours. Sit, stand and bend, then check in a mirror for printing and notice any spot where the sweat guard or a clip digs in.
How long does a hybrid holster last?
A well-made hybrid lasts for decades. How long it lasts depends mostly on the quality of the leather and how you care for it. Shooting Illustrated wrote that "cheap leather might only last a few years, whereas high-quality, properly treated leather might last a lifetime." Our post on holster leather grades explains what separates good leather from cheap leather.
To make the leather last longer:
- Wipe the backer with a dry cloth after you wear it.
- If you carry every day, oil the leather about once every six months.
- Keep a layer of clothing between the holster and your skin when you can.
- Store the holster somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight and high heat.
The Kydex shell only needs a wash and a wipe when it gets dirty.
Every hybrid holster you buy directly from falcoholsters.com is covered by our lifetime limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Normal wear, like scuffs and scratches, isn't a defect.
