HANDMADE CUSTOM-FIT HOLSTERS FOR ALMOST ANY GUN
The Best Leather IWB Holsters in 2026 and How to Choose One
At FALCO Holsters, a company crafting custom-fit handmade holsters for almost any handgun and light, we've been making holsters since 1989. Every custom-fit leather holster we make is wet-molded around a replica of the customer's gun and then tested on the real gun before it ships.
What leather is best for an IWB holster?
Full-grain leather that's thick enough to hold its molded shape. Three grades of leather show up in holster listings:
- Full grain. The hide with its original surface intact: nothing has been removed except the hair and the outer layer of skin. That's the industry definition the Leather Research Laboratory at the University of Cincinnati uses. Look for the words "full-grain" in the listing.
- Corrected grain. Leather whose surface has been partly buffed away to remove scars, then covered with a pigmented finish that is often stamped with an artificial grain pattern. Buffing lets a tannery use hides with scars and damage, and because undamaged hides are in limited supply, corrected grain generally costs less than full grain.
- Bonded leather. Ground or shredded leather fibers bound back together with other materials. Under FTC guidelines it can't be sold simply as "leather," so look for the word "bonded."
If a listing doesn't say which grade a holster is made from, ask before you buy.

Thickness matters as much as the grade. An IWB holster is pressed against your body by your belt all day and bent every time you sit down, and thin leather gives way under that. Our full-grain leather is Italian cowhide, 1/8 inch thick. Leatherworkers describe that as 7 to 8 ounce leather, because leather thickness is traditionally measured by weight.
Which leather tier should you choose for daily IWB carry?
All of our holsters are good for daily IWB carry, so the choice comes down to the leather, the finish and the price. Choose Premium, Timeless or Classic if you want Italian leather 1/8 inch thick. All three are lacquered. Premium and Timeless are our full-grain leather. Classic is a first-class hide that comes pre-colored from an Italian tannery, and it costs less than Premium. Comfort is our suede tier. Suede is the underside of the hide: it's a little softer, it molds easily and holds the shape it's formed into, and Comfort is our lowest-priced tier.
Whichever tier you pick, the holster design stays the same, so a Hawk in Comfort is cut and shaped the same way as a Hawk in Premium.
| Tier | Leather and construction | Finish | Example price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Premium | Full-grain Italian leather in its natural color, cut, stitched and wet-molded in our workshop. Roughly 1 hide in 4 is good enough for Premium. | Hand-colored, oiled with vegetable-based oils and hand-lacquered; the widest choice of colors | $129.95 (A112 Hawk) | Looks and longevity |
| Classic | A first-class Italian hide, the same thickness as Premium and slightly softer; reinforced and double-stitched at high-wear points | Colored and lacquered at the Italian tannery before we cut and mold it; a little less shine than Premium | $95.95 (A212 Hawk) | The same thickness as Premium at a lower price |
| Comfort | Suede, the underside of the hide; molds easily and holds its formed shape | Suede | $74.95 (A412 Hawk) | The lowest price and a softer build |
| Timeless | Full-grain Italian leather; double-stitched at the points of highest stress | Hand-dyed, oiled and lacquered; old-school tan, saddle brown or black | $109.95 (A631, A634, A635), or $115.95 light-bearing | A traditional look with no tier to choose |
Comfort isn't offered on every model. The A122 and the A119 Coyote, for example, come in Classic and Premium only. You'll see the same tier names across our other leather gun holsters.
Will a leather IWB holster collapse after you draw?
A well-made one won't. Once the gun is out, nothing holds the holster open except the leather itself. Thin or soft leather folds shut under the pressure of your belt, and then you need your other hand to open it before you can put the gun back.
Thick leather resists that, and a reinforced mouth prevents it. A reinforced mouth is an extra layer of leather around the opening that keeps the top of the holster open even when it's empty, so you can reholster with one hand. Every model we recommend for daily carry has one.

Do leather holsters stretch out and lose retention?
A well-made leather holster breaks in with time rather than losing its hold. On some of our leather IWB holsters, the molded fit is the only thing holding the gun. That's why the fit has to be right and tight from the start, and why thick leather and a reinforced mouth matter: they help the holster keep that fit for decades.
To prevent any doubts, you can order our Premium and Classic holsters with an optional retention screw, which lets you adjust how tightly the gun is held, or opt for a design with a thumb break. A screw can't be added to a holster made for a gun with a light or laser. We make a thumb break on the A106 Falcon and on the Timeless A631 Read, where the strap is reinforced with steel.
Do you need a sweat guard on a leather IWB holster?
For most people who carry inside the waistband, yes. A sweat guard is a panel of leather that extends up behind the gun on the side against your body. It keeps the gun separated from your skin, so the slide doesn't rub you and your sweat doesn't reach the gun.
Sweat is hard on the holster, too. Our care guidance puts it this way: "Areas of high salt content (sweat) can degrade the leather quality. If possible, keep a barrier of clothing between yourself and the holster, protecting the leather from perspiration." An undershirt does that job.
The Hawk, the Harrier and the A122 all have a sweat guard, and when you order a made-to-order leather holster from us, you can choose how tall it is.

Should a leather IWB holster have clips or loops?
Either works, as long as the attachment holds the holster in one place on the belt. Each type gives you something different:
- Clips let you put the holster on and take it off without unthreading your belt. Steel clips are standard on the Hawk and the A122.
- Belt loops and straps snap closed around the belt itself, so the holster is fastened to the belt rather than held on by a clip's grip. The trade-off is that putting the holster on means snapping each one closed.
- Tuckable clips are narrow clips that let you tuck your shirt in over the holster, so the only thing showing is the clip.
- A claw is an option on many of our IWB models. It catches on the inside of your belt and rotates the grip in toward your body, which reduces printing. Our post on what a holster claw does explains it in more detail.
The belt matters as much as the attachment. A soft belt sags under the weight of a loaded gun and lets the holster tip away from your body. A stiff gun belt spreads that weight along its length instead of letting it pull down in one spot. Wear a purpose-built gun belt in the width your clips or loops are made for.
Which cant and carry position should you choose?
Choose a forward cant for strong-side carry behind the hip and a straight cant for appendix carry. Cant is the angle the holster sits at on your belt.
- Strong side, behind the hip (about 3 to 5 o'clock for a right-handed carrier): a forward cant, often called FBI cant, of 10 to 15 degrees. It angles the grip forward.
- Appendix to 2 o'clock: a straight cant of 0 degrees, so the gun rides upright in front of your hip.

You can get away with concealed carrying micro-compact and subcompact handguns with no cant on your hip as well, as they usually come with petite grips.
You choose forward or straight cant when you order a made-to-order leather holster from us. If you carry appendix, several of our current leather holsters can be set up for it, and you'll find them on our appendix holsters page.
Is a custom leather IWB holster worth it?
For most carriers it is, and especially if your gun has an optic or a light or isn't one of the best-selling models. A custom-fit holster is tailored to your exact model, while a size-based holster is cut to fit a range of guns of similar size. We make both. Multifit is our size-based line and the best price-to-value ratio we offer: it's made from the same leather as Classic, and instead of being molded to one gun, each Multifit holster is cut for a range of similar guns.
We make holsters custom fit for almost any handgun and light, which at last count means more than 3,600 handgun models, roughly 900 of them revolvers, and more than 180 weapon lights. That includes older and less common guns. Most of our leather IWB holsters can be ordered for a pistol with a red dot or high sights, and you select the optic when you configure the holster. Models with an L in the model code are made for a gun with a light and cost $6 to $10 more than the standard version.
Three things to know before you order:
- Lead time. Each holster is made after you order it and typically ships in about two weeks.
- 30-day buyback. You can return a holster within 30 days, in as-new condition and in its original packaging, for store credit. A holster ordered for the wrong gun or light configuration isn't covered.
- Lifetime limited warranty. Every holster is covered for life against manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship. Normal wear, such as scuffs and scratches, isn't covered.
The full terms are on our guarantee page.

How do you break in a leather IWB holster?
Our leather ships tight on purpose, so it holds its shape for years. Part of that tightness comes from the molding itself: as the wet leather dries around the replica, the holster can shrink a little. To break it in, wrap the firearm in a plastic bag, seat it in the holster, and leave it overnight, repeating until the draw is smooth. Do this with an unloaded gun.

If the holster already fits perfectly out of the box, skip this. Breaking in a holster that already fits, or carrying on after the draw is smooth, overstretches the leather and leaves you with a loose fit.
On a thumb-break holster, the strap usually needs more work than the holster itself. Hold the strap and pull it hard while you push the bagged gun in, until the strap stretches enough to snap closed, then leave it overnight.
Leather or Kydex for IWB carry?
Choose leather if you want a holster with character that's comfortable against your body and conforms to you over time, and you're willing to look after it. Choose Kydex if you want a holster that keeps its shape for a long time and needs little or no maintenance. Our leather vs Kydex vs hybrid showdown compares the three materials directly, and our guide to the best IWB holster for comfort and retention recommends holsters in each material.
Leather IWB holster FAQ
What should you check before ordering a custom leather IWB holster?
Check every detail of your gun, because the holster is molded to exactly what you select. Before you order, confirm:
- the make, model and generation of your handgun
- any optic, and whether the gun has high sights
- the exact light or laser, if you carry one
- your strong hand and carry position
- the cant you want
- your belt width
Can a leather holster rust your gun or wear its finish?
It can add to the risk of rust if a gun sits in a damp holster for long periods. Cheap leather holds moisture, including sweat, and steel left against damp leather can start to rust. If you have a leather holster like that, take the gun out of the holster when you take the holster off, rather than storing the gun in it, and let a sweaty holster dry before you wear it again.
Falco holsters effectively resist rust because they're oiled well out of the box and made from thick leather.
If you're protective of your gun's finish, look at the hardware. Our Timeless line hides its rivets, snaps and screws to protect the finish, and our configurator offers an extra suede lining for the same reason.
How do you clean and condition a leather IWB holster?
- Wipe it with a dry cloth after you wear it.
- When it gets dirty, clean it gently with warm water and glycerin soap.
- Store it somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight and high heat.
- Oil it once every 6 months when it's worn daily, to put back the oils and moisture leather loses over time. That's what conditioning does, according to the University of Cincinnati's Leather Research Laboratory.
How long does a leather IWB holster last?
Decades, when it's made from thick leather and looked after. Bob Campbell, who writes for Concealed Carry Magazine, says on the USCCA blog, "I own custom holsters that are more than 10 years old."
